Erik Antonsson, Ph.D. is the chief executive officer, president and co-founder of aiPod, a California-based startup developing autonomous urban Mobility-as-a-Service. In February 2018, the UK Government’s Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy awarded aiPod a multi-million dollar grant to design, develop and demonstrate an integrated six month autonomous Mobility-as-a-Service pilot in London to inform the design of an autonomous pod for urban mobility.
Dr. Antonsson co-founded aiPod at Idealab, the leading technology incubator behind hundreds of innovative companies. Prior to starting aiPod, Dr. Antonsson held senior executive roles at a number of the world’s leading aerospace companies and research institutions. From 2013 to 2017 and immediately prior to aiPod, Dr. Antonsson served as Corporate Director of Technology for the Northrop Grumman Corporation (Northrop Grumman) where he had responsibility for setting strategic directions for Northrop Grumman’s global science and technology R&D portfolio, and leading its strategic university research relations. He previously held a variety of other senior roles at the company beginning in 2007, including establishing and leading the Northrop Grumman Aerospace Research Laboratories. Work in the laboratories included R&D in the area of intelligent autonomy.
From 2002 through 2006, Dr. Antonsson served as the Chief Technologist for NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). In this role, he provided intellectual leadership for JPL in the strategic planning of advanced technology and guidance for approximately 550 technology researchers. He was the co-chair of JPL’s Science and Technology Management Council and also served as a member of JPL’s Executive Council, Strategic Management Council, Project & Engineering Management Council, and as the senior representative to NASA Headquarters and other NASA centers and government agencies for JPL’s basic technology research.
From 1984 through 2009, Dr. Antonsson served as a professor on the faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), where he established the Engineering Design Research Laboratory. He served as the executive officer (Chair) of Caltech’s Mechanical Engineering Department from 1998 to 2002.
Dr. Antonsson earned his B.S. with Distinction, Mechanical Engineering, from the College of Engineering, Cornell University, and both his M.S. and Ph.D. from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has published more than 140 scholarly papers in the engineering design research literature, has edited three books and holds eight U.S. patents.
